Today was another exciting episode of Creator Conversations, and I had the pleasure of speaking with Brent Cannon, an artist whose journey in the music world began at a young age. Creator Conversations is a platform that brings together creatives from all walks of life to discuss their unique processes, insights, and experiences in their respective industries. Every Monday at 3 p.m. PST, we welcome a special guest who has excelled in their craft and business. This week, Brent Cannon joined us, sharing his passion for music, creativity, and collaboration.
Brent’s story is one of resilience and dedication, having started his journey into music at the age of 9. For over 20 years, he has honed his craft, building not just his musical ability but also his business acumen, which has allowed him to make a name for himself in the music industry. What struck me most about Brent was his humility, his love for building genuine relationships, and his dedication to constantly evolving as an artist.
A Journey Rooted in Passion
Brent’s introduction to music was largely self-driven, as he wasn’t initially surrounded by musicians or artists. At just 9 years old, he began writing his own music, drawing inspiration from the songs and artists he admired. By 14, he was already in the recording studio, thanks to a family connection, which gave him his first taste of professional music production. From there, he never looked back. By 20, he had started his own business in the music industry, motivated by the desire to create something lasting for his family and friends.
One of the defining moments in Brent's journey was the birth of his daughter at age 20. This event became a catalyst for his decision to turn his passion for music into a business. He wanted to build something not just for himself but also for his family’s future. Around this time, Brent also faced the challenge of seeing his close friends incarcerated. This difficult period in his life fueled his desire to create a space for them to return to when they got out—something positive and meaningful that would help them reintegrate into society through music.
Building Relationships and Business
One of the main themes Brent emphasized during our conversation was the importance of building relationships. In the world of music and business, the partnerships you form can make or break your success. Brent has had his fair share of ups and downs in this regard, particularly with business partnerships. Early in his career, he formed a partnership that eventually dissolved, leaving him to navigate the business on his own.
Brent was transparent about the difficulties of this experience, but he learned valuable lessons from it—particularly the importance of vetting the people you choose to work with. He advised aspiring creators and entrepreneurs to be cautious when entering into business relationships, especially with friends. This is a common trap that many fall into, as they assume that friendship will translate into a successful partnership. Brent's experience taught him that while friendship is valuable, it doesn’t always mean a shared passion for business. Moving forward, Brent ensures that anyone he works with shares his level of commitment and vision.
He also shared a very relatable piece of advice: don’t jump into business with just anyone. In a world where collaborations can happen quickly, Brent stressed the importance of ensuring that your potential business partners are as dedicated and serious as you are. This is especially true in creative industries where passion drives much of the work, and without equal commitment, things can fall apart.
The Rebirth of Quality Cap Entertainment
Brent is currently in the process of rebranding his record label, Quality Cap Entertainment, which aims to deliver top-tier music and showcase high-quality artistry. After going through the ups and downs of previous business ventures, Brent is now laser-focused on ensuring his brand stands for quality above all else.
This rebranding effort is not just about the music; it’s about the entire experience that Quality Cap Entertainment offers, from the production process to artist collaborations. Brent’s goal is to create a space where independent artists can showcase their talent while maintaining control over their art and careers. He shared his excitement for upcoming projects, including a new single titled Running, which he plans to release soon, along with an EP that will follow shortly.
Super Indie Sundays: A Platform for Independent Artists
In addition to his work as an artist, Brent also runs a podcast studio where he offers independent artists a platform to showcase their work. One of the studio's flagship shows is Super Indie Sundays, a podcast that highlights independent musicians, allowing them to perform live, share their stories, and promote their music. The platform is designed to give independent artists the exposure they need while providing them with opportunities to grow their fanbase and expand their reach.
Brent sees Super Indie Sundays as a way to give back to the independent music community, providing a much-needed space for artists who might not have the resources to promote their work through traditional channels. In this way, Brent is not only building his own career but also helping others succeed in the process.
Navigating the Changing Music Industry
Throughout our conversation, Brent reflected on how much the music industry has changed since he first started. Streaming has become the dominant way people consume music, and social media is now an essential tool for artists looking to grow their audience. Brent acknowledged that these changes have been both positive and challenging. On the one hand, artists now have more control over their careers and can reach fans directly through platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and social media. On the other hand, the pressure to constantly produce content and engage with fans can be overwhelming.
One of the biggest shifts in the music industry has been the decline of artist development. In the past, record labels would invest in nurturing and developing new talent. Today, however, artists are expected to come to the table with an established brand, fanbase, and presence. This puts the onus on artists to not only create great music but also to be savvy marketers and businesspeople. Brent has embraced this reality, using social media to promote his work and connect with other creators.
Collaborating with Other Creators
For Brent, collaboration is key to success in today’s creative landscape. He emphasized the importance of building relationships with other creators, whether through social media, in-person networking, or collaborations on projects. By working with others, creators can tap into new audiences and grow their own brand in the process.
On Fanbase, Brent has found a community of like-minded creators who are eager to collaborate and support one another. This has been a valuable resource for him as he continues to build his brand and expand his reach. He noted that on platforms like Fanbase, you never know who you might be rubbing shoulders with, and the potential for meaningful connections is always there.
Moving Forward: What’s Next for Brent Cannon?
As Brent continues to rebrand and grow his business, he remains committed to his original passion for music. He is excited about the upcoming release of his single Running and the projects he has lined up for the future. Beyond music, Brent is also exploring other creative outlets, including podcasting and content creation, which will allow him to further expand his brand and reach new audiences.
In closing, I want to thank Brent for joining Creator Conversations and sharing his journey with us. His story is a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and the importance of building meaningful relationships. For anyone looking to get into the music industry or any creative field, Brent’s experience offers valuable insights and lessons that can help guide the way.
