The Psychology of Social Audio: A Deep Dive into Fanbase and the Pull of Negativity
I’ve been on many social platforms, but never have I studied the psychology of users as closely as I have on Fanbase. Fanbase means a lot to me—not just as a user but as someone deeply invested in its evolution and community. It has become more than just an app; it’s a space where I build, connect, and grow.
But with that deep connection comes an unexpected revelation—my unconscious pull toward discussions about Fanbase, whether positive or negative.
The Cognitive Dissonance of Social Audio Users
Before Fanbase, I had never been engrossed in the nuances of cyberbullying, cognitive dissonance, and the mental health implications of social media. But Fanbase has illuminated something I had never paid attention to before: the way people thrive on negativity.
Not just react to it. Not just acknowledge it.
Thrive on it.
It’s a phenomenon that social psychologists have studied for years—how people are wired to focus on what is wrong rather than what is right. And in social audio spaces, where instant feedback fuels engagement, this tendency is amplified.
Even when solutions are presented, even when logical counterpoints are made, even when the path forward is clear—many people choose to dwell on the problem. They choose to resist. They choose to stay stuck in a cycle of complaining, rehashing, and fueling the very negativity they claim to despise.
And I—someone who genuinely believes in Fanbase’s potential—find myself in these rooms, listening, observing, and sometimes engaging, hoping I can shift the conversation toward a more productive narrative.
But I’ve learned something important.
The Bait-and-Switch Game: When Negativity Becomes a Strategy
Today, I entered a room titled “Fanbase Investors.” The title piqued my curiosity. Maybe this would be a space to discuss opportunities, funding strategies, and the future of the platform.
But no.
It was the same person, the same messaging, the same negativity—only with a different profile. They’ve learned that if they keep their regular name and profile, people will recognize the pattern and avoid the room. So they adapt. They switch their alias. They lure people in with a neutral or intriguing title, only to repeat the same cycle of blame, skepticism, and negativity.
And the cycle continues.
I’ve realized that some people don’t just engage in negativity; they depend on it. They use it as bait. They structure their conversations around it because they know it works. It draws people in. It fuels engagement. It gives them an audience.
And I—the optimist, the believer, the strategist—fall into the trap, hoping to introduce logic and alternative perspectives, only to find that I’m wasting my breath.
Why People Stay in Spaces They “Hate”
One of the most fascinating aspects of this phenomenon is how many people remain on an app they claim to despise.
They have strong opinions about this so-called “Black app.” They critique every move, every update, every user interaction. And yet, they stay.
Why?
Because their presence isn’t about enjoying the app. It’s about the discourse. The constant back-and-forth. The engagement.
They don’t want to leave. They want to be heard. They want to debate. They want the attention that comes from standing in opposition.
And I get it.
Controversy breeds engagement. Social media thrives on it. But what I don’t understand is why they don’t have this same energy for other platforms. The same platforms that have treated creators unfairly for years. The same platforms that have ignored or suppressed Black voices. The same platforms that collect their data, limit their reach, and yet receive their unwavering loyalty.
Where is that same passion, that same outrage, that same scrutiny for those spaces?
Breaking the Cycle: The Importance of Stepping Away
As much as I want to be the voice of reason, as much as I want to counteract the negativity with logic and solutions, I’ve come to a realization:
Some people don’t want solutions. They want the fight.
And I have to be okay with that.
I have to recognize that my energy is better spent building, creating, and engaging in spaces where the conversation is about progress, not perpetual problems.
I can’t save people from their own cognitive dissonance.
I can’t force them to see Fanbase for what it is—a platform with potential, growth, and a mission that deserves more than knee-jerk criticism.
I can only control my own engagement. I can choose where I spend my time. And I can choose to invest my energy in conversations that uplift, challenge, and push the culture forward.
Final Thoughts: Choose Your Spaces Wisely
Social audio is powerful. It gives people a voice. It creates communities. But it also exposes the darker sides of human nature—the need for drama, the addiction to negativity, and the resistance to change.
Fanbase has shown me that firsthand. And while I will always be invested in the app’s growth, I am learning to be more intentional about where I place my energy.
So, the next time I see a room filled with negativity, I’ll ask myself:
Is this conversation serving me?
Is this space worth my time?
Or am I just feeding into the cycle I claim to want to break?
Because at the end of the day, we all have a choice.
And I choose to build.
I choose to create.
I choose to move forward.
Negativity is loud, but progress is louder.
Let’s amplify that instead.
